Anyone who has driven a Vanagon knows what a limited view one has in the rearview mirror. There is a lot of distance from the mirror to the rear window and the rear window does not offer a wide view of what is behind the van. When backing up, you are essentially blind between what can be seen from the side view mirrors. Earlier, I had installed a backup camera but that was on only when the transmission is in reverse. I decided it was time try something new and in the process discovered the Wolfbox review mirror/dash cam. Yep…a rear view camera that is displayed on face of the rear view mirror while at the same time functioning as a dash camera recording what is happening in front of you.
It took a while to pick a good spot for the rear facing camera…I ended up placing at the bottom of the rear hatch. This gave me a clear view back (think rear view mirror) and maximized the functionality as a backup camera. The Wolfbox comes with straps to mount the unit to the existing rear view mirror but I discovered a company called Backwoods Weld Company that makes a bracket designed specifically to mount the Wolfbox unit to the stock review mirror post.
Wiring was made easier with the cables that Wolfbox provides allowing you to connect directly to the fuse box…picking one fuse that is switched and another that is always live. Running wires to the rear camera was more work but I ended up going over the top through the camper.
I could not be more happy with the result. I now have a wide clear view behind the van whether backing up or watching my backside as I motor along. As an added benefit I now have a dash cam to record what happens in front of the van. As long as you pick the right Wolfbox model (G930)…the mirror fits nicely between the sun visors.
