Volkswagen used the space under the front passenger seat to put the starter battery. It is nice to have it tucked out of the way but the space requires a careful selection of batteries to find one that actually fits the limited space. Of particular concern would be a battery that is too tall which would prevent being able to close the battery compartment lid. In addition to the size limitations, it is concerning to have a metal plate over the top of a battery which would open the possibility of a short circuit if the plate comes in contact with both the positive and negative battery posts.

Without significant metal work, fixing the limited space is difficult. However, reducing the potential for an accidental electrical short is simple. By purchasing a sticky backed rubber battery lid insulation pad from GoWesty and sticking it to the battery compartment lid…the potential for an electrical short in this location is eliminated.

Hopefully, little projects like this help avoid major issues in the future.
