I have never been a big fan of the stock side view mirrors on the late model Karmann Ghias.  I started looking at options and I found that I really like the swan neck mirrors that came on the older KGs but those would require I abandon the existing side view mirror mounts and drill some holes in the body in order to mount the older style mirrors. One of my goals with any modification is to allow the next owner to take it back to stock without too much effort so the swan neck mirrors were off the table. I also like the simple look of the early to mid 60s VW bug mirrors and I found an example where someone adapted the mirrors to a late model KG…so I was on a mission.
I sourced the “101” bug side view mirrors from California Import Parts. With some longer bolts I was able to use the stock side view mirror mounts to position the new mirrors. Although it is not as clean as how the original mirrors mount, the overall look is improved.

The stock side view mirror has a clean mount but the overall
look does not appeal to me.

The mount is not as clean but the overall
look of the mirrors is greatly improved.

The side view mirrors have a more balanced
look and the view back is actually improved,
especially on the right side.
The stock mirrors and hardware has been boxed up and stored with the other parts that have been changed out.
