While working on making sure the heater tubes from the heater box to the body were well secured I noticed that one of the heater cables was broken. Looking at the other cable it was showing signs of age. Although they make a repair kit (works for the throttle cable and heater cables) I thought if the cable broke, it was time to replace the entire cable.
The process to replace the cable is straight forward except one of the cables is slightly longer than the other to take into account the offset of the pistons. With a 50/50 chance of getting the right cable into the right hole, I bet and lost! I compounded my problem by installing the heater cable tube boots before confirm the appropriate cable was on the correct side.
Once I realized the problem, it was a simple matter to pull the cables and swap which cable went into which tube. I am glad I am not working with any time constraints!
