I seldom drive the Karmann Ghia at night but the few times I have I noticed the headlights seem dim. I decided it was time to get out the multimeter and see if I could sort out the issue. First, I pulled one of the headlights out and checked the voltage at the plug…only showed about 11 volts.

I decided to back up to the light switch. To make it easier to access I removed the switch so I could test the voltage at the different terminals. I checked the voltage on the output side of the switch and it was showing only 11.18 volts.

On the input side of the light switch the voltage looked more like one would expect.

On the input side of the light switch, the voltage reads just over 14 volts

So a new switch was ordered. Once it was installed the voltmeter readings improved and the headlights are noticeably brighter…problem solved.

Of course, some day replacing all of the wiring might be in order.
