After replacing the door panels it is time to refresh the dash. This includes replacing the dash face, kick pad and dash pad. The dash face is a vacuum formed plastic overlay that is glued into place. The kick and dash pad are plastic and foam pieces that bolt into place.
The first part of the project was to get the old stuff off…
The dash face was showing its age. The dash pad which had been recovered with foam and vinyl was in good shape but clearly not original. |
The dash pad cover was sagging a bit and you can see the dash face was starting to pull away in place. In anticipation of this project the after market radio has already been removed. |
Some parts of the dash face were starting to break off showing the metal of the dash underneath. |
With the old stuff of it was important to clean things up to provide a good surface for the glue to adhere to.
With the dash pad and face removed you see the metal. What looks like rust is actually the old glue. |
When cars still had simple audio systems…the hole at the top center of the dash is for the single center speaker. |
The dash cleaned up and ready to install the dash face. |
There were a few areas of bare metal and in a couple of cases some minor surface rust was represent. The good news is there were no areas were the metal had rusted through. Those areas were cleaned up, prepped and treated with POR 15 to arrest the rust.
Some surface rust on the driver’s side windshield pillar. |
With the glue residue and loose rust removed.
