Dash Refresh – Part 2

With everything cleaned up, the first step was to dry fit the dash face. This way you can prevent any hang ups that might get in the way of properly seating the face material. Once the necessary adjustments were made it was time to apply the glue and position the face. After the glue set I cut out the openings for the gauges, switches and radio. I also installed the new kick pad which is under the dash.  Before putting the the dash pad on, I installed the new center radio speaker.  Finally, the dash pad was bolted into place.
The dash face is installed and some of the switches and gauges
in place.  Notice I have installed a new speaker in the dash.
The new dash pad sourced from Airhead Parts is in place.  Just
waiting for the tach (what was the clock), radio and the
Karmann Ghia dash script to complete the project.

As part of the dash refresh I decided to add some gauges to monitor engine health.  Volkswagen used idiot lights for oil pressure and nothing for oil temperature. I sourced an oil temperature and oil pressure gauge from VDO. Knowing both oil pressure and temperature are important with small air cooled engines. I also took the opportunity to have the stock clock, which was the same size as the speedometer, modified to become a tachometer.  It seems to me time is easy to determine…but like with oil temperature and pressure, knowing the engine RPM can be useful in extending the life of a VW engine.  This was also a good time to heck the electrical connections and freshen up the knobs on the switches on the dash. The oil temperature and oil pressure gauges are being mounted on the underside of the ash tray.  This is done for two reasons…first it does not require any change to the dash and second the gauges and mounting pods can be removed as easily as pulling out the ash tray.  I used the existing hole and grommet that heater control light is routed through to bring the necessary wires for the gauges into the passenger compartment.

Gauges installed under the dash, DIN radio mount installed
and the new Karmann Ghia script is in place.
