Reading some of the posts on one of the air cooled VW Facebook groups, I learned about the need to have the vacuum line from the carburetor loop up before heading down to the vacuum advance mechanism on the distributor. This was the way the vacuum line came from the factory and the idea was to keep any fuel from using gravity to find its way to the rubber diaphragm in the vacuum advance mechanism. Gasoline would cause premature deterioration of the vacuum advance diaphragm.
A quick check of various VW parts suppliers and most had steel vacuum lines bent to the OEM specifications. I ordered a tube from Wolfsburg West. Once it arrived, it was easy to bring the vacuum line on the Karmann Ghia up to the original factory configuration.
