Hardening the cooling system

Failure of the cooling system can bring a Vanagon to an untimely end. Cooling lines that run the length of the car and a lot of different connections in difficult to reach areas means keeping the cooling system fully functional is a bit of a challenge. After looking at where the system is likely to fail, I replaced all of the main hoses, put in new stainless steel cooling lines under the van and replaced plastic parts such as the coolant expansion tank and the coolant hose junction with updated metal parts from GoWesty.com. While I was at it, I updated the lower and upper thermostat housing and replaced all of the small lines around the engine.

Even with efforts to ensure the coolant system upgraded, leaks can happen. To make sure I know when there is something wrong with the cooling system, I added the GoWesty audible coolant temperature alarm kit. This kit provides and easy to install circuit board and speaker that provides an audible alarm when the system is either at risk of overheating or the coolant level is low. It is nice to have the audible alarm in case I do not see that small flashing red light on the dash!
