When I bought the Karmann Ghia the factory jack had been replaced by a similar style jack made for Mercedes Benz. The jack was a different size so it did not fit into the stock jack holder…which on the 1974 Ghia is under the rear jump seat. In addition, the retainer clip that holds the jack in place was missing.

I thought the retainer clip would be easy to find on the sites selling late model Ghia and beetle parts…little did I know that almost no one carried these clips. Even on ebay the retainer clips for the Karmann Ghia jacks did no show up. By chance, I was looking at how they stored the jack in the VW Thing and the clip they use looks a lot like the clip that would have been found in the Karmann Ghia. Without being certain, I went ahead and ordered the VW Thing jack retainer clip from Thingparts.com. Sure enough…the clip was what I was looking for.

Jack retainer clip used in the VW Thing is the same as the one used in the late model Karmann Ghias.

With the clip in hand I went looking for a factory original jack…and I found that on eBay. With a jack that fits into the space provided and the necessary retainer clip, I can now deal with a flat tire.
