Wednesday, I brought home a 1974 Karmann Ghia. The car was sold to me by the second owner who has had the car for 45 years. For a car this old, the body is pretty straight and I am not finding any significant rust with an exception being a small area on the floor pan. I am told the car spent much of its life in the dry climate of Las Vegas. The car was repainted at least 10 years ago close to the original color. Overall, this is a great place to start on making this car a clean, safe and reliable weekend driver.
I am starting to create a list of items that will need attention. The good news is for most of these items, I will be able to do the work while I continue to drive the car. Like with my earlier project (62vwdoublecab.blogspot.com), I am leaning heavily on thesamba.com for information about how to approach some of the projects. I am also finding that my go to parts supplier for the truck…Wolfsburg West…does not handle Karmann Ghia parts (other than those that are the same as what was used on the bugs). I am already developing a list of companies that supply parts that are specific for the Karmann Ghia.
